The Danube Gorges are considered one of the most beautiful parts of the Danube’s Canyon. Placed on Danube passing through the Carpathians, the Danube Gorges are a component of the “Iron Gates I” Natural Park, with a length of nine kilometres unfolding along the biggest and oldest canyon a river has made in Europe.
The Danube Gorges is a destination ideal for the weekend, as all the touristic objectives are easily accessible from this accommodation unit, reaching them by car or on foot, on beautiful tracks.
You can't get to the Danube Gorges area without admiring one of the most important tourist objectives of Romania - King Decebal Statue.
The bas-relief is 55 meters high and is located on the rocky bank of the Danube, between Eșelnița and Dubova.
What few tourists know is that the works on the tourist attraction are not yet complete, the statue of the last king of Dacians being made only in proportion of 60%.
The work was carried out between 1994 and 2004 and was not easy at all. 12 climbers, led by Florin Cotarcea, worked every day for 10 years. The place where the sculpture was made can only be reached by boat, which is why heavy equipment could not be used. The climbers carried their tools on their backs and climbed to the scaffolding, in an area full of vipers.
Few years ago, Florin Cotarcea said that “the statue (...) is far from ready. It is a work that can be seen well from a distance, but up close nothing can be seen. It is not finished. (...) Working conditions were not easy. It was difficult to access with materials. The rock had cracks, we had to cement them, the concrete and all the materials we carried it with our arms”.
The Big and Small Cauldrons, separated by the Dubova basin, represent a portion of the Danube gorge, between Plavișevița and Ogradena rivers, which have a total length of 9 km. The water flows through the gorge guarded by rocky walls up to 75 m high above the water, which shrinks the river at the boilers, narrowing it to 230 m. Before the hydroelectric power plant at the Iron Gates was built, here the Danube flowed swirling, forming cataracts in which the waters seemed to boil like in huge boilers.
The Big and Small Cauldrons together form the most beautiful tourist routes in the Danube area. Here you can admire, besides the Face of Decebalus, Tabula Traiana, Trikule Fortress, built in the 15th century, Ponicoava and Veterani caves and, of course, Mraconia Monastery.
Danube Gorges are the perfect destination to spend a few relaxing days. Once you get here you can go hiking in the "Iron Gates" National Park, full of mesmerizing viewpoints, boat trips on the Danube and, of course, fishing trips.
